Sandy asks…
How does a trainer choose a lead sled dog?
How is a lead dog chosen? What does a trainer look for in its leader?

Ron M. answers:
Lead dogs make their presence known. They are typically the most inquisitive puppies; the sharpest, most “aware” of their surroundings. They begin in the middle of the team, and their drive becomes apparent when they are trying to run up on/pass the dogs in front of them.
Eventually, they are tried in lead with an experienced adult — and they either take right to it, or they don’t. Being in the lead puts a lot of pressure on a dog, especially in a large team. Some dogs buckle under the stress.
How does a musher get his/her first lead dog? If they are lucky, they buy one from a more experienced musher, who honestly sells them a lead dog (not just a dog “has led” or “might lead”). The tough part is getting an experienced musher to part with a good lead dog…they are invaluable.

Laura asks…
What black american drove the lead dog sled and was the first to set foot at the north pole?

Ron M. answers:
African-American Matthew Henson and four Inuit men named Ootah, Seeglo, Egigingwah, and Ooqueah

Maria asks…
15 years from now will America really still be the lead sled dog?

Ron M. answers:
It’s kind of hard to say. I think America is in a very severe financial mess right now… Foreign opinion is pretty low even though Bush is out.. Bogged down in consuming and ultimatley pointless military engagements…
I think if America can learn from this, put in proper financial regulations, revamp its foreign policy, and begin to practice more self-sufficiency and begin to ween itself off of foreign fossil fuels.. I think it will be the top dog. If not.. It’s going to get ugly.
